From the first week of September 2005, Essential
Science IndicatorsSM
users are able to access a new, upgraded version — offering more precise
and controlled measurements of research, and more control over how to view this
data. These recent upgrades deliver a number of refinements that make it even
easier to conduct ongoing, quantitative analyses of research performance and
track trends in science. Covering a multidisciplinary selection of more than
8,800 journals from around the world, this in-depth analytical tool provides
valuable data for evaluating the influence and performance of scientists, institutions,
countries, and journals.
Notable enhancements allow users to:
- Use Field Rankings to see the average total of citations
per paper in a field as whole — and assess the relationship between
a researcher’s average citation rate and the citation average for their
field.
- Sort and filter results based on number of papers, citations,
or cites per paper.
- Conduct Boolean searches by title, researcher, journal,
institution, and country, as well as for
Highly Cited and Hot
Papers and Research
Fronts — enabling more specialized searches and precise results.
- Directly navigate to category rankings from results records
to better highlight the relationships between data within Essential Science
Indicators. From a record, users can now navigate directly to a researcher’s
ranking within the field.
- Set thresholds for a specific number of papers, citations
or citations per paper when viewing the scientist, institution, country or
journal rankings.
- Access links from the graph pages to a tabular display
of the numeric values represented by the bar graphs
- Access an ALL FIELDS statistics line in the field rankings
display for an individual scientist, institution, and country
- Directly link to the editorial commentary section of Essential
Science Indicators, in-cites
and Special Topics through an icon on the specific paper's display
Additionally, Essential Science Indicators usage reports are now available
for subscribers. Librarians will be able view the number of sub-sessions and
queries from their institution by month.
